Aspen Food & Wine / Duvine Style

The Aspen Food & Wine Classic kicks off the Summer social season in Aspen.  Why does AspenSpin.com always miss such an important event?  Cabin Fever, bruddah.

Luckily, A-Spin corespondent Andy Levine, founder of Duvine Adventures filed this video report from the 29th Annual Aspen Food & Wine Classic. Andy knows about luxury, travel and recreation as Duvine Adventures was named one of the 50 best tour operators in the world by National Geographic.  Duvine's Mission: BIKE, EAT, DRINK, SLEEP.  Mission accomplished in Aspen (except for the sleep).

The Bro-Am goes PRO

Switchfoot Bro-Am 2011. Click 4 pixThe 7th Annual SWITCHFOOT BRO-AM presented by Hurley slayed it again in 2011 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Yeah,  Bro-Am is a surf contest, a free concert and a vendor village, but it's waaaaay more. It's about a COMMUNITY coming together to give back to those less fortunate.  STAND UP for KIDS is the recipient of all the money raised at Bro-Am.  Stand Up for Kids is an organization that HELPS HOMELESS and Street Kids.  Based in Atlanta, Stand Up for Kids has outlets in many major cities across America and is composed mostly of volunteers.  Every day, Stand Up for Kids volunteers are out there trying to stabilize the lives of at risk teens.

SwitchFootthe San Diego based surf-rock band inspired by faith just keeps getting BIGGER and BIGGER.  They won a Grammy this year for their album Hello Hurricane.  AspenSpin is willing to bet they surf better than any other Grammy winning band in the world.  This year was Switchfoot's 7th Annual Bro-Am...and it keeps getting bigger too.  The line-up of pro and bro surfers is stellar.  3-time World Champ, TOM CURREN always makes the scene.  This year Hurley imported their A-Team to take the championship.  Unique rules apply in this tag team event which requires each shredder to score one wave regular stance and take a wave swithchfoot, or goofy.... think throwing with your opposite hand.

Doing the swith dance at Bro-Am. Click 4 pixA gloomy morning evolved into one of those brochure-like crystal-clear So Cal. days at the beach.  The 2'-4' contestable but tricky surf yielded some spectacular rides.   As the surf contest wound down, the beach stage warmed up with some serious musical talent. Some "friends of the foot" started saving spots near the stage around 8 am.  The bands killed it; Nena Anderson, The Howls , The Romany Rye, The Silent Comedy and of course headliner Switchfoot.  NO DRUGS or ALCOHOL were consumed at Bro-Am.  First of all drinking on the beach is illegal in San Diego and more importantly...the sobriety message is sent by both Swithchfoot and Stand Up for Kids.  Getting it done without drugs and alcohol is a crucial factor to many of the Stand Up kids who attended and were feted with a back stage BBQ and VIP credentials.  Living on the street is no day on the beach.  These kids have it tough, in fact some of them have no home at which to do their homework.

The surfing, the beach time, the bands...it was a great day for everone.  Swithfoot's singer/songwriter Jon Foreman has said over and over in many major media outlets..."it's my favorite day of the year".   After 8 hours in the sand AspenSpin felt lucky to be alive. Tired, when our head hit the pillow, we couldn't get those STAND UP kids off of our mind.  Where were they sleepin' tonight?

IRCE 2011

IRCE Keynote Arianna Huffington. click 4 pixThe Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibition (IRCE) is the largest e-commerce event in the world.  IRCE 2011 hit San Diego this week with full force.  7500 conventioneers and more than 500 exhibitors invaded the Gas Lamp District to rally around e-commerce.  Special Guest Speaker Arianna Huffington, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Huffington Post (which recently sold to AOL for $315 million) led a tremendous roster of speakers and presenters. Huffington confirmed to the crowd that "self expression has become the new entertainment"and that there has been "an explosion of creativity and expression".  She explained the importance of transparency and immediacy in today's hyper-connected consumers.  According to Huffington content today must be"real time, social and engaging".  She clarified that customers today are becoming more selective, they are no longer surfing thousands of sites, but going to a select few.  She quoted Craig Newmark from Craig's List "trust is the new black".

Jack Love publisher of Internet Retailer magazine, organizer of the event said that both the news media and the retail industry are going through a "revolution". In 2010 On-line media accounted for 13.5% of all ad spending while making up 8.5% of all retail sales...and increase from around 2% of sales in 2000.  e-bay's North American head man, Christopher Payne shared that among e-bay's $62 billion in sales, a pair of shoes was purchased every 3 seconds in 2010.

IRCE SWAG was off the hiz.Key take homes: Multi Channel retailing is unquestionably the wave of the future. According to Walgreen's President of e-commerce Sona Chawla multi-channel customers are 3x more valuable than regular customers. Walgreen Co. opened their first store in 1901 and has 7500 brick and mortar stores..and recently purchase DrugStores.com to increase their e-commerce portfolio.  To compete today a retailer must be local, digital and mobile.  The digital retail channel is growing 5x faster than traditional retail.  The social media impact on retailing is unclear as retailers attempt to leverage the social graphs of their customers to maximize sales and create trust.  Many believe that social media will transform shopping allowing consumers to "share the experience".  Facebook will attempt to become a force in retail, look for f-commerce coming soon.  Friends can provide a "trusted" recommendation and "purchase validation".   Women dominate social media as approximately 70% of likes and shares on FB are from the ladies.  Speed is important, customers want their on-line purchases faster.  e-commerce and commerce are blurring into one.  It took the i-pod almost 3 years to sell 1 million units, the i-pad sold more than 10 million units in less than one year.

On the exhibition floor IRCE attendees mingled with models and were showered with tons of swag. Affliate marketers, call center solutions, catalogers, CRM system operators, data management services, shippers, e-commerce platforms, e-mailers, fulfillment providers, logistics specialists, merchant services SEO experts and more passed out free stuff like it was .....free.

IRCE 2011 was an enlightening look into the future of retail.  Thanks to technology the shopping experience is changing rapidly across the globe.  To sum it up in 140 characters or less... People are buying cars on their phones.

Throw Down in A-Town

Aspen is a small town.  Sometimes you run into someone you can't stand.

Oh to be a fly on the wall at Cache Cache in Aspen when Lance Armstrong "bumped into" Tyler Hamilton.

Local sources in Aspen texted us a heads up about the  "heated exchange" that occurred between semi-local Armstrong and his rival Hamilton, who was visiting the glamorous resort town.  The former friends allegedly almost threw down near the rest room at the upscale restaurant and bar.  Its not the first time an argument has occurred at Cache Cache (appropriately pronounced Cash Cash).  It's usually a customer who's reservation got "lost" vs the management, or a Sugar Grand Dad vs Miss Right Now.  This time it was two of the most accomplished cyclists in the world face to face in the narrow, often over crowded bar area.

Lance Armstrong has a second home in Aspen, while Hamilton was in ZG to participate in Outside in Aspen a series of promotional events.  Our source was unsure if Lance's appearance at Cache Cache was pure coincidence or he got the word and quickly popped on his townie and sped over to initiate the contact.  It was no secret that Hamilton was in town, as advertising materials for Outside in Aspen touted the Olympic Gold Medalist and recent 60 Minutes interviewee.  See the original story on the OUTSIDE BLOG.  Kudos should go out to ACRA for devising such a viral PR campaign.  Best one since Charlie Sheen and the "most expensive town" stories.

Hopefully we'll find out what really happened, although we'll probably never really know.  The media has exploded the story and now the FBI is involved according to a report from the NY Daily News.   We're sure there's more to come
