The King Rules in Snowmass.

Aspen Film's Oscar Party at Viceroy SnowmassWinners get to write the history books.  Tonight as 100's of millions watched the Academy Awards on TV, THE KING'S SPEECH took home the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director among a gaggle of other little gold men.  The Oscars 2011 is history and the Brits rule again.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted in an attempt to help the Oscar's appeal to a "younger demographic".  We're gonna give them an F for effort.  While Franco and Hathaway both have had notable movie performances (Pinapple Express was sick) hosting should be left to those who host.  ABC's commercials were cute, and they are both likable and attractive, but they didn't exactly kill it.  The show seemed to move slowly with a methodical corporate sense of humor which did not click. Kirk Douglas, Billy Crystal and Melissa Leo's F-Bomb could not make the show interesting.  The immediate fashion impact could be felt all the way to China as knock-off dresses began production at Midnight.  Aspen Spin's best dressed, Mila Kunis ( lavender and lace), Michelle Williams (pixie) Jennifer Lawrence (sleek in red) and Natalie Portman ( in Plum and pregnant).

Deborah Newman Sharpe and Frankie Welfeld were intrumental in the success of Lights, Camera, Oscars. While Hollywood royalty walked the RED CARPET,in L.A., Aspen's cinefiles did the same at Aspen Film's LIGHTS, CAMERA, OSCAR's bash in the Ballroom at Viceroy Snowmass.   As the sun set over Snowmass, Aspen Film welcomed their well heeled supporters to a posh big screen viewing party.  Hosted by Aspen's own Oliver Sharpe the party included a silent auction, movie trivia with prizes and an Oscar pool.  Aspen Film really knows how to party and they proved it tonight in Snowmass.

Morcheeba Trip Hops in Aspen

Morcheeba Trip Hops in AspenMaybe it was the 30,000 POW verts we schralped in the foot of fresh today.  Maybe it was the medicine.  Maybe it was the fat-daddy steak we devoured at Pinons before the show. Maybe it was the good news that came our way today.   Naaaaaah,  It was the sultry, sexy, smoky, mysterious music produced by MORCHEEBA at Belly Up in Aspen, Colorado that got us going.  Click 4 pix Morcheeba.

Trip Hop is an apt description for the British trio who cruised through a kick a$$ set in Aspen.  Morcheeba whoose name loosely translates to "the way of Cannibis" is a phenomenal live act.   Honestly, AspenSpin was not familiar with Morcheeba prior to the day of the show. We knew it sold out weeks ago.  On Friday, as the POW POW fluttered on Ajax, everyone we encountered on the mountain was talking about Morcheeba.  The sophisticated hippsters from NYC, the trustafarian hippies from Cali, the Argentine lifties, the dirt bag ski bums (with all due respect) ....everybody was going to the show....except AspenSpin.

Geeky as it may seem we sent out a facebook status seeking Morcheeba tix.   Booya, within a half hour we had Morcheeba's band manager 's name and phone number.  "You didn't get it from me" concluded the private message we received from parts unknown.  A quick call and some super-fast talking...and BOOM!  AspenSpin was ON the LIST!!!  The deal got done. Sh*t like that makes the whole  #sm thang worthwhile.

Click 4 pixWe got to Belly Up in time to catch Mr Anonymous, the opener. The DJ /Drum outfit had the crowd jam dancing with vigor.   A-Spin had no pre-conceived notion about Morcheeba. We didn't google 'em or wiki 'em or i tune 'em.  With zero expectations and very tired legs we scored a sweet stool at stage left.  If its a hot show in Aspen and especially if its sold out...AspenSpin needs to be there.  The anticipation on the main floor was building.

Morcheeba is tough to describe, but Vocalist Skye Edwards bedazzled the eclectic crowd with her soulful voice and her amazing gown.  The Godfrey Brothers showed off their multi-instrumental prowess which produce a streaming conciousness of tonal sweetness.  The captivating first song, By The Sea opened up all our senses and we slowly gave way to the melodic stylings and began to float and sway with the music. ....and the audience.   Morcheeba is huge in Europe and we know why.  Its difficult to put in words...so click the MORCHEEBA pix.  Morcheeba has a beautiful, distinctive musical style that transformed the Belly Up into well behaved "be-in".  Everyone at the show seemed to love it.  Now you know...Morcheeba is a "must see", they deliver the goods.

Oscar Night in Aspen.

Oscar Night in Aspen. Click 4 Party DetailsBlogging has its privileges. AspenSpin actually scored a legit invite to the 2011 Oscars in L.A.  Yesssirrrrr  we had a Golden Ticket, and a seat high in the bleachers, probably next to a smokin' hot actress/waitress. A. Party still has a few connections outside the bubble.  We nixed the boon-doggle to Hollywood for three reasons.  1) POW EXPECTED this weekend  2) When A-Spin leaves Aspen during ski season...we only go to.....wait for it.....SNOWMASS. 3) A hoody and flannel jeans won't cut it with the fashion police on the real Red Carpet.

Snowmass is going glam for the Oscars as ASPEN FILM is hosting their annual LIGHT's, CAMERA, OSCAR PARTY, Sunday at 5.30 pm at the VICEROY in SNOWMASS.  Click the links or the little gold men on the party invite below for all the info.  Aspen Film's Oscar party is going to be huge, an event not to be missed. Christian Bale in The Fighter. Click or Call 970-925-6882 to secure an invite.

This year's Oscar field is stacked.  There are 10 best picture nominees in 2011 and all are deserving of the honor. There were some fabulous films this year. We loved The Fighter and True Grit (thanks to Aspen Film). The Social Network and The King's Speech are both superior movies.  Black Swan is super-intense (and who doesn't want to get with Natalie Portman). Winter's Bone is one of the scariest, creepiest movies  we've seen in a long time.  127 Hours, also scary, depicts Aspen local, Aron Ralston's incredible story of survival.  The Kids are All Right is a great film with great performances and it was produced by 313 homie Gary Gilbert.... so we are rooting hard...right, GG.   The Social Network is getting all the Buzz...but we're picking THE KING's SPEECH as best picture. Hollywood  likes to think Yiddish and dress Brittish.

The rest of AspenSpin's Oscar predictions follow below.

Yeah GG. We loved The Kids Are All RightBest Actor:  Heart says Jeff Bridges, The DUDE. Head says The King. Colin Firth.

Best Actress: Annette Benning, The Kids are All Right. Go Girl.

Best Supporting  Actor: Christian Bale, The Fighter... amazing (a sure thing).

Best Supporting Actress: Jackie Weaver, Animal Kingdom (great flick, crazy villainess)

Best Director:  David Fincher, The Social Network...give 'em that one.

Worst Picture:  Inception ..sorry Leo.

Drinks, munchies, prizes, movie trivia, a killer silent auction and special room rates at Viceroy.  This is going to be good. A Powder Day, spa treatments, a BIG TIME Oscar Party with Aspen Film and super-posh dog-friendly accommodations.   Shoot bro...it looks like Aspen Spin is going beyond the traffic circle for the first time this season.

Public Enemy in Aspen.

Public Enemy in Aspen.Aiiiiight. Aiiiiight. Aiiiight. Yeeeeahhh. Aiiiiight, Yeeeeeahhhh Boyeeee.

Public Enemy and their hip hop crew played a SRO show in Aspen last night.  Flavor Flav, Chuck D. and their entourage which includes Professor Griff and S1W are perhaps the most influential rap act of all time.   Coming out of Long Island in the early 80's Public Enemy connected with disenfranchised African American youth through their politically charged lyrics and  unruly stage presence.  The white kids from the suburbs caught on later and made PE one of the top selling Hip Hop groups of all time. Their album FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET is preserved in the Library of Congress.

Hype Man, Flavor Flav is the self proclaimed #1 reality TV star of the decade.  He also hyped his restaurant in Clinton, Iowa...Flav's Fried Chicken...or FFC.  Its located across the street from KFC.  They played all their hits, Welcome to the Terrodome, 911 is a Joke, Don't Believe the hype and of course Fight the Power.   The crowd...mostly white males...loved Public Enemy.  Even after a siiiiiiiiiiiiiick POW day in Aspen, the hip hop energy in the crowd was palatable as Flav and Chuck D. battled the altitude and the decades to produce a killer show.
