Board Meeting

Movie Stars and extreme athletes Marie-France Roy and Grete Eliassen @ The Meeting. We know its early October, but Aspen's Ski Season kicks off soon--like in 50 days.  Our theme for the2008/09 ski season is GO BIG ...or go Home.   This past weekend the whole snow-sports industry went BIG at The MEETING and The NEPSA Video Awards.

Click NEPSA and BOARD MEETING to get a double shot of pix.

The Meeting is a "Celebration of Snow Film & Culture."  It's a gathering of the top snow-film makers in the world.  They showcase their art in a festival-like setting sponsored by Aspen/Snowmass and held at  a fantastic venue, the historic Wheeler Opera House. The Meeting has evolved into a "must attend" industry event.  With brands like OAKLEY, RED BULL and TARGET in the mix and production companies such as Matchstick Productions, Poor Boyz Productions and 1242 films offering up their eye candy---THE MEETING got a little wild in Aspen.Seth Morrison, The Dad of Rad and his entourage.  Along with numerous film screenings, it allowed industry leaders to meet in an "almost-convention" like atmosphere  to discuss the future of  snow sports, world-wide.

Always a highlight of the weekend is the NEPSA (Aspen spelled backwards) Video Awards.  The 6th annual NEPSA awards kicked it all off in front of an extremely rowdy crowd of skiers and boarders.   NEPSA is an amateur contest that gives the non-sponsored "dude-bros and shred betties" a forum to show off their finest video offerings---with cash prizes.   Spirits were running high at the Wheeler,  this year's theme, was Entrourage, which added to the excitement.   The entrants, the crowd and even some of the hardened professionals all got their ya ya's out at NEPSA.  In fact the howling , heckling and screeching from the audience reminded us of the sound of the line at the BUCKET at 8.30 a.m. on a huge POW day.  We had a few of those last season ---memba?

We've got 2 photo albums fired up for your enjoyment.

Hockey Night in Aspen

Aspen's Merritt about to put the biscuit in the basket. Photo: Stowman Stines IIThe Aspen Leaf's Hockey Team peaked at just the right time to defeat the Red Wings Alumni 7-3 at the ARC.  The younger, more acclimatized Aspen Leaf's were agile, mobile and hostile en route to a solid, well earned victory.

Hockey was just part of the STIRLING CUP ALL STAR WEEKEND which included a golf tournament and plenty of VIP parties.  The Stirling Cup is named in memory of the late Stirling Cooper.  Charitable proceeds from the weekend were donated to Aspen Junior Hockey, AVSC and Aspen United Soccer. The Red Wings Alumni team came into Aspen with a strong squad of former NHL greats.  Reed Larson, Denis Hextall, John Ogrodnick, Shawn Burr and Doug Brown to name a few. They were matched against The Aspen Leaf's, a hand-picked group of All-Stars from Aspen's elite Men's Open Division.

The speed and skill was apparent on both sides of the red line. A sold out crowd at the ARC cheered on the action, along with all-time NHL great Bobby "The Golden Jet" Hull.  Good sportsmanship was shown throughout the very competitive match. As the third period started, the Wings "old timers" seemed to be searching for another gear, but given the 8,000 ft. altitude, that higher gear never kicked in. The Leafs got two goals each from Matt Merritt and Yale Lewis along with stellar goal tending from Justin Biehl.  "Number 33 stood on his head" complimented 3-time Stanley Cup Champion, Mike Krushelnyski.

The Stirling Cup All-Star Weekend is a great event and raised money for 3 worthy youth sports organizations..

Aspen Walking Tours

Aspen Walking Tours / Aspen's DarksideAspen Walking Tours is the brain child of longtime Aspen local Dean Weiler.  We recently took AWT's night-time tour known as  ASPEN's  DARKSIDE.  The tour focuses on Aspen's ghosts, murders and mayhem.  Weiler has done his homework and the 90 minute guided tour is stocked with some pretty scary stuff, but the kids will love it.
AWT's Dean Weiler spins a scary tale

AWT had a very successful Summer sharing the history and mysteries of Aspen.  Click Aspen Walking Tours for more infomation and to reserve space on the next tour.  Also, please note that during Halloween Weekend, AWT will be offering a brand new experience, ----Walking with the Dead.  It's a historical journey through the Ute Cemetary, Aspen's oldest burial ground.  If you like ghost stories and murder mysteries don't miss Aspen Walking Tours'  newest offering WALKING with the DEAD, this Halloween.

The Network

AspenSpin.com is takin' care of business.  We are now a full-fledged member of The ASPEN CHAMBER RESORT ASSOCIATION (ACRA).  You can check out why we joined and review the numerous benefits of membership at AspenChamber.org.  In addtion to the all important discounted ski pass---we don't have to sneak into ACRA's great events anymore, we actually get invited.  Scary!!ACRA Connects

ACRA recently hosted their Fall Networking session at The Mountain House Lodge.  ACRA members were treated to cold drinks and delicious appetizers prepared by The Mountain House Lodge kitchen.  We're not into it just for the eats and drinks, the networking event  gave us a chance to meet and mingle with the movers and shakers of Aspen's thriving business community. AspenSpin was pretty well connected before---but  now, after joining ACRA---we know everybody.

Click into THE NETWORK to see the pix.

AspenFilm hosted their 30th Annual FilmFest.  A wide ranging schedule of flicks wowed the cinephiles who came to AspenLita Warner Heller, Cass Warner and a few of Lita's Girlz from all over the country to participate.  Highlights included; THE BROTHERS WARNER, a documentary about the famous Warner Brothers and their impact on Hollywood.  We also enjoyed  FLASH of GENIUS starring Greg Kinnear in a story of one inventor's obsessive battle against the US auto industry.

A-Spin checked into several other parties and events this weekend in A-town.  To see which pix made the cut---Click THE NETWORK .
